John`s Recollections - 2010

From the cliff diving along the promenade to the market where one could buy almost anything, old Mazatlan provides many interesting spots to visit. For tourists however, it is the beaches and nightlife that draws in the crowds and the Golden Zone in Mazatlan provides those venues. During our stay. there was hardly an overcast day with temperatures always in the eighties. English is well recognized at all establishments and the phrase "It`s like Christmas every day" became our motto, even though we first heard it from a transplanted North American.

Mazatlan , Mexico was researched on the web as a place to visit for the winter. Our (Kathy & John) two month visit took place in the January thru February time frame. Could not have picked a better spot temperature wise, as mid-eighties were the rule during the day, followed by low seventies in the evening. My good BASEBALL travelling buddy Larry joined us for this super sun-filled vacation.

A major attraction in the area is a visit to El Faro , a lighthouse on top of a small island at the entrance to the harbor. Prior to visiting review our specific writeup.
The beach is just a great place to relax, bargain with the vendors or swim in the ocean.
To spend some time in the evening visit one of many activities available in the area.

John`s Recollections - 2010

So far, the trip over the Sierra Madres by bus, was the most exhilarating and likely the most dangerous experience that we have encountered. It really did take a while to understand why, we as North Americans, had our blinds open, while all others were closed. Drops of over thousands of feet, on a road ( with few barricades ) that was carved into the mountain face provided many oohs & ahs from scenic views, but not being aware of the many vehicles before us that had left the road into unknown chasms, likely saved us from understanding really how dangerous this trip was.

Mazatlan , Mexico was a great winter vacation, however getting there and back took different paths.

The bus ride from San Antonio (Kathy & John) seemed like a great trip to see some sights along the way. The Sierra Madres however, was an obstacle to a smooth unassuming ride. This will be rembered forever, as the excitement level was at it`s highest.
On the return trip Larry took the train ride to Copper Canyon allowing for another picture gallery highlight.

Hope that you enjoyed the views,
but there is really nothing like seeing it yourself.
