Corn Palace
Mitchell, South Dakota

Trip Planning logo

Each spring the Palace is covered with corn husks to create murals of various scenes. A truly remarkable building that has taken corn to another level.

John's Comments Sometimes the unusual takes on a different perspective. Not to be "corny" but I kinda enjoyed the stopover. It was very interesting to walk thru the building and see how the various colors of corn husks were used to make the pictures or displays. Mitchell, South Dakota, home to one of our unusual sites. Unusual for most, but if you are from Mitchell, South Dakota then it may be thought of as being practical, especially when the surrounding farm lands most favorite crop is corn. Here buildings have been covered with corn stalks, and the various colors of the stalks themselves are used to create pictures that depict many of corns` ancestory. Amusing as it may be thought of, it did make for a very interesting stop-over.
John`s Recollections - 2009

For an unusual experience this rates as one of my favs. Waking up to find out there is a CORN PALACE in town is rather different, but then after visiting and seeing the structure that is decorated with colored CORN HUSKS has to rate as an experience that normally would not occur. We spent several hours touring and exploring the building.
