Canyonlands National Park
Utah

Trip Planning logo

The Colorado and Green rivers divide the park into four districts: the Island in the Sky, the Needles, the Maze and the rivers themselves.

John's Trip Comments Close to Moab, Utah, Canyonlands National Park covers quite a large area, but the northern part shown in the video clip allows for viewing many of the scenic sights. The Colorado river, that flows thru the ground formations created over thousands of years, can be seen from the plateau. We were fortunate to arrive later in the day, and the rock formations stand out vividly as the sun sets.
John's Personal Views Was able to see only the Island in the Sky portion but the views were terrific. Would return to discover the sights missed. Pictures and video clips were taken around sunset which enabled the shadows to be highlighted. I found this to be an excellent time to view the park and surrounding area. We did not spend a lot of time in the park, but several things really did stand out, the vegetation is quite different from most areas and the effects of the Colorado river flowing for years over the terrain show how nature really does change the land formations.
John`s Recollections - 2009

Went to this park later in the day and we were rewarded with some excellent photo opportunities. The Colorado river bed had shadows that helped to show the true depth of the gorge and as the evening sky approached the sunlight bathed the sage brush and silouetted the rock formations.
